WISER Highlights Winter 2023

Greetings Friends of WISER,

We enjoyed a very busy fall at WISER. Starting with our most exciting news, WISER was successfully re-accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare in all areas of concentration, including teaching/education, assessment, research, systems integration, and fellowship programs! This effort is a testament to the hard work of our team at WISER, along with the many stakeholders with whom we interact on a day-in and day-out basis. Together we share a partnership that maintains a solid commitment to improving the quality and safety of healthcare through the development and implementation of simulation-based education and assessment programs. The society has accredited WISER since 2012.

We also were instrumental in hosting two major symposiums. The first was our internal UPMC Rapid Response Systems Symposium which was coordinated by WISER and involved over 140 participants from across our system, along with external and internal speakers with expertise on the topic. Responding to acutely deteriorating patients remains a significant challenge for all hospitals and healthcare systems. This symposium allowed for information sharing and dissemination of best practices and techniques used across UPMC.

Also, in October, we hosted a simulation users network (SUN) meeting in conjunction with Laerdal Medical. This was a fantastic day of learning and sharing information on the power of simulation associated with its role in the education of individuals and teams, as well as the assessment of care practice environments. This well-attended event is part of the commitment of WISER to spread high-quality information and education to the simulation community.

We are now making our final preparations to attend the international meeting for simulation healthcare that will take place in the latter part of January in Orlando, Florida. This “super bowl” of healthcare simulation conferences is always an exciting opportunity to learn from each other, network, and engage in continuous quality improvement of the efforts provided by simulation programs around the world.

We are hoping to see you in Orlando and would love for you to stop by our booth in the exhibit hall.

That’s it for now. I hope everyone enjoys a happy new year, and together we welcome the opportunities of 2023.

Until next time.

Happy simulating!
