Using a Hybrid Model for Patient Care Technician Training

WISER Highlights Spring 2022

The Patient Care Technician (PCT) Course was created by UPMC St. Margaret and WISER to help new PCTs have a smooth transition into their role as members of the healthcare team.

Previously, all new PCTs were required to take a seven-day, in-person course offered once a month. While all new PCTs lacking healthcare experience must still attend that course, PCTs with a certain level of clinical experience can instead attend this hybrid course. The hybrid WISER course has the same learning objectives and outcomes as the mandatory training and includes interactive learning modules, instructional videos filmed at UPMC St. Margaret, and knowledge checks.

A new Patient Care Technician is expected to learn a specific set of skills and assume responsibilities in the healthcare team, such as Infection Control, Emergency Procedures, and Applying EKG Leads.  Sarah Foley BSN, RN, the course director explained, “This course is designed to train PCTs more efficiently. The new format will better prepare staff for our units.” Once the participants complete work through online modules and quizzes, they will attend the in-person skills day to work through simulation scenarios, practice with task trainers and real equipment, and apply their skills with immediate feedback from the facilitators.
