A Contrast Reaction Safety Class is offered monthly at WISER’s main center in Oakland. In this class, Radiology attendings, residents, nurses and technologists learn how to manage life threatening situations and additional complications that arise in a radiology context. This course allows participants to become familiar with identification and management of patients with contrast reactions using an interdisciplinary approach. Through a blended learning model, participants engage with an online didactic module in the Simulation Information Management System (SIMS) prior to an onsite series of simulation-based scenarios.
To be able to offer this training across a greater number of UPMC hospitals and centers, WISER worked with the Contrast Reaction Safety Committee to host a day where radiology professionals from across the system would come to WISER to learn how to facilitate the Contrast Reaction course and run the scenarios for future participants.
Using a large classroom and six Medical Education Theater (MET) rooms, participants first experienced the class as learners, moving through and participating in each of the scenarios which involved patient reactions (e.g., Pediatric Bronchospasm, Adult Bronchospasm and Laryngeal Edema) and the use of a standardized contrast reaction box.
After lunch, the participants partnered with the instructors to help facilitate the class to a small number of Contrast Reaction Safety attendees. WISER Simulation Specialists supported them in learning to use the simulators, and instructors supported them in the debriefing.
Another Train-the-Trainer event will be held in 2022 as the program expands.
Participants’ feedback said they would recommend the course to a colleague and that the WISER staff were very helpful.
