WISER Re-endorsed by the American Society of Anesthesiologists

Paul Phrampus

WISER is honored to have once again received full re-endorsement as an approved program in the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Simulation Education Network (SEN)! WISER Director, Paul E. Phrampus,  MD, FSSH, CPE extends a profound thank you to WISER Associate Director, William McIvor, MD, who continues to lead the partnership with us to create such resounding successes, and has done so since the inception of this program.

“This accreditation/endorsement from the ASA is a testament to the excellence in simulation based education that is provided to participants of our programs.”

Dr. Paul E. Phrampus

Director of WISER

This accreditation/endorsement from the ASA is a testament to the excellence in simulation based education that is provided to participants of our programs. In this particular case, the primary beneficiaries of the educational efforts are practicing professionals. Dr. McIvor and his Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology (MOCA) faculty team, who remain committed to these programs, are truly contributing to the highest quality and safest care being delivered to patients requiring anesthetic and peri-operative care. The experiential learning, teaching in teamwork, and communications that are built into the training are transformative

Dr. Phrampus also extends his sincere appreciation to the WISER staff who support Dr. McIvor with MOCA and other programs that he initiates. In addition to WISER staff, the Standardized Confederates who participate in this event, from the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Standardized Patient program, are another integral part of the program’s success.

WISER’s MOCA® simulation course is a fun, fast-paced and challenging experience. During the simulation sessions, participants will manage patients with hypoxia and hemodynamic instability in the setting of general surgical, neurosurgical, obstetric care and pediatric surgery. These Saturday classes run from 7:30 am to 3:00 pm.

WISER began teaching with human-patient simulation in 1996, making us one of the longest-tenured simulation education facilities in the world. We have significant experience teaching anesthesiologists skills like management of the difficult airway, anesthesia crisis leadership, and central venous cannulation. You, or one of your colleagues, may have taken one of our courses at the ASA’s annual meeting. The curriculum focuses on relevant and challenging perioperative crises that a clinician might face. Our instructors are authors and experts in the field, and well versed in practical training for our anesthesiology colleagues. The University of Pittsburgh Department of Anesthesiology values simulation education so highly that it requires that all department faculty attend training at WISER.

WISER MOCA offerings are full for 2021, but we will soon be announcing 2022 dates.
