Last week, we were thrilled to welcome 140 prospective University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine students to WISER at Scaife for a “second look” tour. During their visit, these future physicians got hands-on experience practicing spinal taps and administering epidurals using our ultrasound equipment, utilizing laryngoscopes for guided intubation, and applying resuscitation techniques like chest compressions and defibrillators on our simulators.

WISER’s Manager of Operations and tour guide Martin Mayer provided expert instruction and guidance in utilizing all the simulation equipment offered. Reflecting on the event, he shares, “I thought it went great. The students love hands-on. Being able to use an ultrasound machine or putting a central line into one of our trainers is something that they don’t know how to do, but that they can look forward to doing someday if they come to Pitt. It gives them a taste of what’s to come.”

This second look tour provided a genuine glimpse into the depth and quality of the simulation-based healthcare training and education programs available through the University of Pittsburgh. As a shared resource of both UPMC and Pitt, WISER is proud to provide quality learning experiences utilizing simulation to help prepare the physicians of the future for their careers in medicine!
