On Tuesday, July 22, WISER hosted 25 fellows from this year’s class of the Jewish Healthcare Foundation’s Patient Safety Fellowship. The visiting fellows learned how simulation education and assessment methods can help patient safety and improve the quality of care. The visit began by a lecture with a question-and-answer session conducted by WISER’s Director Dr. Paul Phrampus, followed by hands-on rotations introducing them to various clinical procedures by faculty members from the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing as well as the University of Pittsburgh Department of Emergency Medicine. Dr. John O’Donnell led a session on fiberoptic intubations, Dr. Michele Dorfsman taught candidates how to place an endotracheal breathing tube, Dr. Advait Kothare demonstrated how to develop competency in clinical decision-making using ultrasound, and Dr. Stephany Jarmillio taught emergency rescue techniques to open the airway and provide ventilation to patients in need. This was an exciting visit and provided the fellows a new perspective regarding how effective simulation-based education and assessment programs can benefit patient safety!
