WISER recently showcased its new facility at Scaife Hall by hosting its first Clinical Procedures course. All 156 second-year medical students had an opportunity to participate in training on basic airway management in our state-of-the-art center.
To enhance learning, WISER used Elevate’s LearningSpace platform to broadcast Dr. Bill McIvor’s live demonstrations of airway techniques and IV placement throughout the center. Each of the four sessions accommodated approximately 40 students. The video system allowed Dr. McIvor and his colleagues to broadcast instructional content and observe students in real time across multiple training areas.
During the first part of the session, students divided into two large groups, utilizing both the multipurpose ultrasound lab and the Medical Simulation Education Theater (MSET). Demonstrations were broadcast to both rooms via the LearningSpace system. Following this, students broke into smaller groups for hands-on airway training utilizing partial task trainers, where faculty provided guidance and coaching on techniques such as bag-valve-mask ventilation, oral airway use, and basic intubation.
In the second half of the training, students continued in five small groups, each practicing ventilation skills on full-size human manikins. Instructors, equipped with workstations on wheels, remained in the room to provide close educational support while maintaining full control over the manikins’ breathing and vital signs. Students also utilized patient monitors to manage their cases, reinforcing their learning in a realistic clinical environment.
Overall, this was an outstanding course, and highly appreciated by the students. WISER looks forward to utilizing this center and the IT capabilities provided to train the next generations of physicians for decades to come!
