Paul Phrampus, MD, CPE, FSSH is the Director of the Winter Institute for Simulation, Education, and Research (WISER).  He is a Professor in the Departments of Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.  He is Board Certified in Emergency Medicine. 

Dr. Phrampus is a fellow in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, a Past-President of the organization, a member of the editorial board of the journal Simulation in Healthcare and has been actively working in the simulation field since 1997.

Dr. Phrampus has mentored numerous Fellows and faculty members in simulation over the last two decades and has dedicated the scholarly part of his simulation career to faculty development.  He has overseen a highly successful method of curriculum development at WISER that employs a collaborative relationship between subject matter experts and simulation/education experts.  The result is an expert-curriculum, competent-facilitator model of delivery. He is a co-author of the world renowned “Train the Trainer” faculty development course series for simulation-based education called iSIM (Improving Simulation Educational Methods).

Dr. Phrampus is a Past-President (2013) of the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) which has more than 4000 members.  He has served in a number of key leadership and consulting positions within the organization including co-chairing the annual meeting in 2011 and is widely considered to be one of the top international thought leaders in the simulation community.  He was honored as one of the inaugural Fellows of the SSH Academy and continues to serve on the editorial board of the journal Simulation in Healthcare.

Dr. Phrampus has a passion for assisting faculty from around the world in their development as simulation educators, scholars and researchers.  He has traveled extensively nationally and internationally with a focus on faculty and simulation program development.  He is a highly sought-after international speaker, regularly conducts faculty development workshops and demonstrations and has assisted in the development of programs at Universities and clinical institutions around the world.  Threaded throughout his work is the theme of simulation as a method to enhance patient safety and to improve quality of care.  Dr. Phrampus leads consulting efforts to develop faculty excellence and provides quality assurance to expanding simulation programs globally, including preparation for accreditation.  In addition to the United States, his education, patient safety, and simulation efforts have included work in Australia, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Italy, Mexico, Taiwan, Thailand, Tibet, South Korea, The Philippines, and Singapore.
